DIRECTOR | ISABELLA CONNELLEY
The video was inspired by the ruler of Libra 'Venus', the Goddess of love, beauty and desire. The video draws inspiration from the Botticelli painting 'The Birth of Venus' 1486, which depicts Venus arriving on the shore after her birth, emerging from the sea as a fully grown woman. Venus stands in a giant scallop shell as though she is a pearl, a great beauty from the sea.
I was also inspired by the process in which pearls are made, by a grain of sand irritating the inside of an oyster or clam which coats the grain of sand layer upon layer with nacre (also known as mother-of-pearl) until a pearl is formed. I wanted to use this as a metaphor of how society defines gender and places these labels and stereotypes of gender upon us, but in the end we all grow up as beautiful individuals.
